Witter Next Defense In US

The WBC jr welterweight champion Junior Witter (36-1-2) is likely to travel to the US to make the third defense of his WBC 140 pound title. It is strongly rumored that he will take on unbeaten Demitrius Hopkins after Ricky Hatton has dismissed him once again as a possible opponent. That fight has created a buzz in the British boxing scene and would be a career high payday for Witter. It would also provide the drama of a valid dislike for one another. Witter who is a young 33 does not have forever to wait on a mega bout. He will travel uncharted waters this March and make a defense in the US.

No venue has yet been agreed but it is expected to be in Los Angeles and televised live on HBO. The unbeaten Hopkins is the nephew of Bernard Hopkins and is unbeaten in his pro-career to date and is ranked WBC#5, WBA#8 and IBF#2. Witter won the title in September 2006 when he defeated Demarcus Corley on points and looked impressive in his last outing with a comprehensive stoppage win over former WBA champion Vivian Harris last September.

Here is what Witter had to say on his profile in America. “I’m going to deliver in America,” he told the Bradford Telegraph. “I’m not just going to kick the door wide open but rip it off its hinges. Hopkins is good but he’s not met anyone like me. It may be in his own back yard but it’s just him and me in a square ring when that first bell sounds. I’m not interested in winning on points. I’m going to knock him out.”

Witter believes that Hopkins, despite his pedigree (Demetrius is the nephew of Bernard Hopkins), is not in his league when it comes to technique and ring experience.

Witter is seen as a common title holder by many fighters and promoters, who feel that he is too much risk not enough reward. It is the same as being a rock stuck in a hard place, when you have the talent to be able to beat an elite fighter but do not have the marketability as one.
