Joe Calzaghe who is the undisputed WBA, WBC, and WBO super middle weight champion and has held his title for over a decade; has been given honors and presented with the prestigious BBC Sports Personality of the year award last night in Birmingham, England. It was presented to him by non other than Lennox Lewis himself at the MGM Grand where he was supporting Rick Hatton in his fight against Floyd Mayweather.
This is a strong indication as to the growth and popularity of the sport of boxing in the UK.
He beat out motor racer Lewis Hamilton and fellow pugilist Rick Hatton came in third. This past September in Millenium Stadium in Cardirf, Whales Joe Calzaghe took on power punching " the Viking Warrior " Mikkel Kessler in front of 50,101 screaming fans. That fight was like being on another galaxy just watching the level of performance for superstar athletes. The results were decided by a national phone vote. His father Enzo Calzaghe won the award for "Coach of the Year" for the contributions to Joe's career and also for the development of a local boxing gym which shows a great contribution to the community.
